Assault: Man Sentenced for Violent Theatre Attack in Waterford, Already Serving Time for Similar Crime

Waterford, Ireland — A man has received a prison sentence for assaulting a 61-year-old woman as she exited a performance at a local theater, marking a distressing incident that has raised concerns about public safety. The attack occurred on May 18, 2024, shortly after the victim left Garter Lane Arts Centre around 10:30 p.m.

The 23-year-old assailant, originally from Jordan and currently without a permanent residence in Ireland, is already serving a three-and-a-half-year sentence for a similar crime against a woman in her 40s in Dublin, which took place just days after the Waterford incident. Recently appearing at Waterford Courthouse, the man, accompanied by an interpreter, was sentenced once again for his violent actions.

As the victim made her way to Meeting House Lane, she was confronted by the man who grabbed her and attempted to bite, kiss, and assault her further. In a statement shared as part of the victim impact assessment, she described how she managed to fend him off, yet continues to grapple with the emotional aftermath, often wondering what may have transpired had she been unable to resist.

Following the assault, the woman immediately contacted her husband before the Gardaí initiated an investigation. Security footage from the area was reviewed and a nationwide alert was issued to law enforcement. An identifying officer linked the suspect to previous crimes, recognizing him from the Dublin case.

Initially, the man denied his involvement when faced with the CCTV evidence. During earlier court appearances regarding the Dublin case, questions arose about his background. He misled authorities by claiming he had escaped from Syria, but it was later established that he was from Jordan and had only recently arrived in Ireland as an asylum seeker. His asylum application has since been withdrawn, and he expresses intentions to return to Jordan.

A victim impact statement delivered during the sentencing detailed the lasting effects of the assault on the victim’s mental health. The woman reported that she now experiences heightened anxiety and insecurity, worried for her own safety and that of others, particularly women and girls, should the assailant be released.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly, in his remarks, praised the victim’s strength and resilience as demonstrated in her testimony. He acknowledged the severity of the attack, describing it as a “random and violent” act by a sexual predator.

In court, the man’s defense team presented a letter of apology, in which he expressed remorse and pleaded for mercy. His attorney noted that he has faced challenges while imprisoned, including being assaulted and requiring medical intervention.

Ultimately, Judge O’Kelly sentenced the man to three years and nine months in prison. This term will run consecutively with his existing sentence, with three years of the new sentence suspended on the condition that he leaves Ireland upon completion and refrains from returning for a decade.
