Youth Charged for Alleged Assault at Corner Brook Intermediate School

CORNER BROOK, Newfoundland and Labrador – Two youth in Corner Brook, NL have been charged following an alleged assault on another youth at Corner Brook Intermediate School on Thursday, Feb. 1. According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, patrol officers responded to a report of a disturbance at the school shortly after 9:30 a.m. The police determined a male youth had been assaulted and received medical care from paramedics called to the school for injuries believed to be not life-threatening. The victim was then transported to the hospital via ambulance for further medical evaluation.

As a result, another male youth has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and a female youth has been charged with assault. Both of the accused have been released to appear in provincial court on a later date. The RNC confirmed that the incident happened inside the school. Const. James Cadigan, the RNC’s media relations and public communication officer, said he did not know for certain if all of the youth involved were students at Corner Brook Intermediate.

Cadigan would not confirm if there was any video surveillance footage of the incident, but said the matter will be thoroughly investigated. “We are continuing to gather information,” he told SaltWire on Friday, Feb. 2. “We believe there were perhaps witnesses or other information available.” If anyone does have information, he urged them to contact the RNC in Corner Brook.

He added that events of this nature can be traumatic for the school community and the community as a whole. “We would certainly ask, if this is (affecting) anyone, to please be open and speak about it with someone close to you,” said Cadigan. “Talk about how these kinds of events can cause stress and anxiety for anybody who may have witnessed or heard about it. Protect your mental health by being open and lean on those you love.”
