Woman Killed In Daylight Stabbing On Atlanta MARTA Train

Transit police said a suspect was arrested after the Saturday attack.

ATLANTA — Rail service at MARTA’s Oakland City Station was paused Saturday after a woman was fatally stabbed on a train and a suspect was arrested, transit officials said.

The stabbing happened around noon on a rail car near the southwest Atlanta station. MARTA police said officers were nearby and moved quickly after the report came in. First responders tried to save the woman, but she died at the scene. Authorities had not released her identity by Sunday morning.

The attack caused a temporary shutdown at Oakland City while investigators gathered evidence and spoke with witnesses. MARTA said several people saw the stabbing. The agency called the case a “senseless act of violence” and said its police department was working to determine what happened before the woman was attacked.

During the disruption, MARTA used shuttle buses to connect passengers at Lakewood, Oakland City and West End. The service change affected riders on a busy part of the system’s southside rail corridor. Normal operations resumed later Saturday after police cleared the scene.

Officials have not said whether the victim and suspect knew each other. They also have not released the suspect’s age, hometown or expected charges. MARTA police said the person was taken into custody immediately, but the agency had not provided a booking update or court schedule as of Sunday.

The killing drew new attention to safety on MARTA after another stabbing at Georgia State Station the previous weekend. That victim survived. Oakland City Station also was connected to a separate fatal shooting in April, when a teenager was killed and two suspects were arrested.

Riders interviewed after Saturday’s attack said they wanted a stronger police presence. MARTA said it understood the concern and fear caused by the killing. “MARTA Police are actively investigating and remain committed to the safety and security of our riders and employees,” the agency said.

The case stood Sunday with one suspect in custody and no public identification of either person involved. MARTA police are expected to release more information once relatives are notified and investigators complete early interviews.
