Police said Ronald Cross was arrested in the fatal shooting of Patricia Wieber.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indianapolis police arrested a 75-year-old man after a woman was fatally shot Thursday night and officers later wounded the suspect during a pursuit near I-70 and South Harding Street.
Ronald Cross was taken into custody in connection with the killing of 65-year-old Patricia Wieber, police said. The case moved from a homicide scene on North Rural Street to a police shooting investigation on the city’s near southwest side within about two hours.
Officers were called about 8:20 p.m. May 28 to the first block of North Rural Street, just north of East Washington Street, after a report of a person shot. Police found Wieber with gunshot wounds, and medics took her to a hospital, where she died. IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said officers at the scene received information about a suspect vehicle tied to Bullock Court, a cul-de-sac southeast of West Southport Road and Bluff Road.
Police said officers went to Bullock Court and saw two people leave in the suspected vehicle. Officers later tried to stop the car near West Southport Road and Bluff Road. The driver got out and was arrested, but police said the passenger, identified as the homicide suspect, moved into the driver’s seat and drove away. Officers followed while additional units moved into place.
The pursuit ended near West Morris Street and South Harding Street. Police said officers used stop sticks, and SWAT vehicles struck the suspect vehicle before it was forced into a grassy area near the I-70 interchange. Investigators said the suspect fired at officers after the stop. At least three officers fired back. Cross was struck at least once and taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police said no officers or bystanders were hurt.
Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene. Another report said two guns were found after the chase ended. Body camera and dash camera video captured the police shooting, according to police. The full video had not been released as of the latest public update.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Internal Affairs also opened a review. The officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave, which police described as standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
Cross remained in custody after being arrested on a murder allegation in Wieber’s death. Police had not released a detailed motive or the full relationship between Cross and Wieber by Sunday, May 31.
