Michelle Wilson, 61, was shot alongside her husband during a violent weekend that brought six homicides across Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Friends and neighbors were mourning 61-year-old Michelle Wilson after she was killed and her husband wounded in a shooting outside their North Philadelphia home, one of several killings recorded during a violent weekend in the city.
Police said Wilson and her 67-year-old husband were on the porch of their home in the 2800 block of North 24th Street when gunfire erupted about 11:49 p.m. Sunday. Officers responding to the block found both wounded. Wilson was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after midnight. Her husband survived and was reported in stable condition.
Neighbors described the couple as longtime members of the area who were known for working and spending time around the block. Local reports said they had recently operated a food truck in front of their home. Friends gathered near the property Monday as investigators continued examining the scene and searching for whoever opened fire.
The killing came at the end of a weekend in which six people were killed in separate incidents across Philadelphia, according to police and local reporting. The deaths occurred in several neighborhoods and involved unrelated investigations. Authorities had not announced arrests in the case involving Wilson as of Tuesday.
Despite the weekend’s violence, Philadelphia remained below the homicide pace recorded at the same point last year. District Attorney Larry Krasner said Monday that the city had recorded 108 homicides so far in 2026, 29 fewer than at the same point in 2025. The weekend deaths nonetheless represented a sharp concentration of violence over only a few days.
Wilson’s death brought the citywide numbers down to a neighborhood level for residents of North 24th Street. A neighbor told local reporters that Wilson’s family had gathered for a barbecue earlier Sunday, with relatives and children around the porch. By Monday, relatives and friends were gathering outside the home to grieve.
Investigators recovered at least 20 spent cartridge casings from the area around the porch, steps, sidewalk and street. Surveillance video from the block shows a man wearing a hat and face covering walking nearby before the shooting and appearing to move a handgun from a bag into his coat. Police are reviewing video as part of the homicide investigation.
Authorities have not determined publicly whether Wilson and her husband were targeted. Police have also not announced a motive or identified the person seen in the surveillance footage as the shooter. Wilson’s husband has not been publicly identified.
The Homicide Unit continues to investigate Wilson’s death while detectives work to identify whoever was responsible and determine why the couple was caught in the gunfire. No charges or arrests had been announced by Tuesday.
