Detectives are trying to identify additional witnesses after police said cooperation at the chaotic shooting scene was limited.
ROSEVILLE, Mich. — Roseville detectives are working to identify additional witnesses after gunfire during a wedding reception at Athena Hall left five people injured and police with unanswered questions about who fired the shots and what triggered the confrontation.
The investigation centers on a large fight reported around 11 p.m. Aug. 8 at Athena Hall, 25650 Gratiot Ave. Police received multiple 911 calls about a fight and shots fired in the parking lot. Witnesses told officers that guests had begun fighting and that at least two handguns were displayed before gunfire erupted.
Police Chief Mitchell Berlin said victims and witnesses at the scene were not very cooperative with officers and that detectives would work to identify additional witnesses. Authorities have not announced an arrest, named a suspect or disclosed a suspected motive for the confrontation.
Three people were wounded by gunfire and taken for medical treatment, police said. Their injuries were described as not life-threatening, and officials said they were expected to recover. Among the wounded was a woman who had been shot in the chest. Officers stopped a vehicle leaving the area and discovered her inside as the driver was taking her to a hospital.
Investigators are also examining injuries that occurred as guests rushed from the property. A man was struck by a fleeing vehicle and appeared to have suffered a broken hip, according to police. He received treatment at the scene and was then taken for further medical care. A fifth person suffered a deep cut to a hand, though police said the cause of that injury was not immediately clear.
The rush of people and vehicles from the hall created a complicated scene for responding officers. Berlin said guests fled as the situation deteriorated. Investigators must now sort out the sequence of events, determine who possessed the guns described by witnesses and establish who fired the shots.
Police have not publicly identified the injured people. Authorities also have not said what caused the initial dispute, whether the people believed to have displayed firearms were among those injured or whether investigators recovered any guns from the scene. No criminal charges related to the shooting had been announced.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Roseville Police Criminal Investigations Division. Detectives are seeking information from people who saw the fight, the display of weapons, the gunfire or the movement of people and vehicles immediately afterward.
The central questions remain unresolved as investigators continue gathering witness accounts: what prompted the fight, who brought out the firearms and who fired them. Police have reported that the three shooting victims are expected to recover, but no further investigative breakthrough had been publicly announced.
