Woman Fatally Shot Before Dawn In San Jose Neighborhood

The case centers on a woman found wounded before dawn Sunday and a person detained nearby.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman shot early Sunday near Bonita Avenue and Sunny Court, where police said officers detained a person of interest close to the scene.

The case now turns on what investigators can confirm from the scene, witnesses and any nearby video. Police have released only limited details, leaving the victim’s name, the detained person’s identity and the suspected motive unknown while detectives continue the inquiry.

Police said officers were called to the area at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday after a report that someone had been shot. Officers found a woman with at least one gunshot wound and requested medical aid. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. “A person of interest was arrested near the scene,” police said, without saying what evidence connected that person to the shooting.

The shooting left investigators with several early questions. Police have not said whether the woman was found on Bonita Avenue, on Sunny Court or at another nearby location. They also have not said whether she lived in the area, whether she was alone when officers arrived or whether witnesses described a suspect leaving the scene. No public report had listed a firearm recovery, suspect vehicle or number of shots fired.

The area near Bonita Avenue and Sunny Court sits within a residential part of San Jose, where narrow streets and nearby homes may give detectives access to doorbell cameras, security systems and possible witnesses. Homicide investigators commonly canvass homes and businesses after a fatal shooting to build a timeline of movement before and after the gunfire. Police have not said what evidence has been collected in this case.

The woman’s identity remained pending through the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. Police said next of kin notification must happen before her name is released. The person detained near the scene had not been publicly identified, and authorities had not announced a booked charge. A person of interest is not the same as a charged suspect, and police had not described the person’s legal status beyond the arrest near the scene.

The shooting came as San Jose police continued to investigate other violent incidents from recent weeks. Department records showed the city had reached its 13th homicide investigation of 2026 by June 29. The Bonita Avenue case could raise that count once police formally classify and update the case. Officials had not released a new homicide number tied to Sunday’s death by Monday morning.

Police said more information was expected Monday as detectives continued reviewing the case. As of this update, the woman’s name had not been released and no formal charges had been announced.
