The baby was checked by medics after police said the child was found sweating in a parked car.
ROCHESTER, Pa. — A bystander’s quick action helped protect an infant found alone in a hot vehicle Thursday outside a Giant Eagle in Beaver County, police said.
The incident happened around noon in Rochester Borough as summer heat pushed temperatures to about 91 degrees. Police said the child was crying inside a parked vehicle while the mother, Kai Lyn Boyd, was shopping inside the store.
According to court paperwork, the bystander heard the baby, found the infant alone and moved the child into an air-conditioned vehicle before officers arrived. Police said the infant was sweating heavily, and the car seat was wet with sweat.
Boyd returned to the parking lot about 10 minutes later, investigators said. Police said she told officers she had forgotten the baby was with her. The infant was evaluated by medics at the scene and was expected to recover.
The case drew concern from shoppers who spoke near the store after the incident. One shopper told KDKA-TV, “Every time I hear that, I get shocked.” Another said 10 minutes in heat near 100 degrees “doesn’t take long.”
Police said Boyd was charged with felony endangering the welfare of a child. She remained in the Beaver County Jail after failing to post $30,000 bond. Authorities have not released the infant’s name or age.
Rochester police have not said whether more charges are possible. The next steps in the case are expected to move through Beaver County court as investigators review the complaint and any witness accounts.
