Deputies said the fire followed the end of a decadeslong relationship.
OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — A woman suffered third-degree burns after Broward deputies said an 84-year-old man set fire to a car she was inside during a dispute Friday at an Oakland Park 7-Eleven.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office said Franklin Davis and the woman had recently ended a 42-year relationship before the incident. Deputies said the two argued before Davis poured a flammable liquid and set the vehicle on fire in the store parking lot.
The fire happened at the 7-Eleven at 3100 NW 9th Ave., deputies said. The woman suffered third-degree burns to her left leg. Davis also was injured, with burns to his hands and face, according to investigators.
Davis appeared in court Monday in a wheelchair. Deputies said he was under the influence of alcohol when the fire was set. Authorities did not identify the woman or release more information about how she escaped the vehicle.
The charges against Davis include premeditated attempted murder, arson causing bodily harm and criminal attempt, solicitation and conspiracy to commit a capital felony. A judge denied bond, keeping Davis in custody at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale.
The case remains active in Broward County. Deputies have not said whether more evidence, surveillance video or witness accounts will be released. Prosecutors are expected to handle the next steps in court.
