Police are investigating what led to the deaths of a 42-year-old woman and her 18-year-old son on Evelyn Drive.
NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio — Police are trying to determine what led to a shooting inside a North Olmsted family home that left a 42-year-old woman and her 18-year-old son dead and the woman’s husband in custody.
The investigation centers on a residence in the 3800 block of Evelyn Drive, where police and firefighters were sent after a 911 call at about 2:10 p.m. Saturday. Authorities have described the case as an isolated family incident, but investigators had not announced a motive as of Sunday. Police identified the man in custody as 44-year-old Hammodi Ahmed Ali Al Naser.
Officers arriving at the home found the 18-year-old outside near the front of the residence with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. First responders treated him before he was taken by ambulance to a hospital. He later died, authorities said.
Inside the house, officers found the teenager’s 42-year-old mother with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not publicly identified either victim by name.
The response brought several law enforcement and emergency agencies to the neighborhood. Investigators remained at the property for hours, taking photographs, gathering evidence and speaking with neighbors as they began reconstructing what happened.
Detective Lt. Matt Beck described the scene as chaotic because numerous family members and children were involved. Police said children connected with the household were taken to another residence and were safe. Authorities have released few details about what those family members may have witnessed.
Investigators also encountered a language barrier as they began interviews. Police said they were seeking Arabic-language assistance as part of the effort to interview Naser and continue gathering information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police said a handgun was recovered from the scene and Naser was arrested without incident. He has since been charged with two counts of aggravated murder. The filing of criminal charges does not establish guilt, and authorities have not publicly detailed the evidence supporting the charges beyond their account of the shooting and investigation.
Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones issued a statement expressing sadness for the family and the wider North Olmsted community. Her statement discussed the challenge domestic violence poses for communities and the work of public safety officials. Police, however, said the specific motive behind Saturday’s shooting remained unknown.
Naser was being held at the North Olmsted City Jail and was expected to appear Monday in Rocky River Municipal Court. Detectives said the investigation was continuing and that additional details would be released when available.
