Authorities had not released a suspect or vehicle description Sunday as investigators traced a deadly late-night encounter through Cypress.
CYPRESS, Texas — Harris County investigators were searching Sunday for a shooter and an unidentified vehicle after a 5-year-old girl was fatally shot while riding with her family on Grant Road in what authorities described as a possible road rage attack.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 11800 block of Grant Road. Witness information indicated the family’s vehicle had been traveling west from the area of Jones Road when another vehicle became involved and someone opened fire. The child was struck inside the vehicle and later died at Memorial Hermann Hospital after being flown there by Life Flight.
The investigation entered Sunday with significant questions unresolved. Authorities had not announced the identity of a suspect, provided a confirmed description of the other vehicle or explained what interaction led to the gunfire. No arrest had been reported, leaving detectives to rely on witnesses, physical evidence and any available video as they worked to establish the sequence of events.
Investigators were canvassing the area around Grant Road and interviewing people who may have seen part of the encounter. The family’s direction of travel gives detectives a corridor to examine, but officials had not publicly said whether they had located surveillance video showing the shooting or the vehicle involved.
The girl’s mother, who was driving, was not injured. Other young children were inside the vehicle when the shots were fired, and two suffered minor injuries from broken glass. Initial local reports differed on whether there were three or four additional children in the vehicle, so the precise number had not been independently confirmed Sunday morning. The children were reported to be younger than 10.
Authorities have characterized the case as apparent or possible road rage rather than announcing a final motive. Investigators had not released details of any exchange between the motorists before the shooting, and there was no publicly confirmed account of what either driver may have done before shots were fired.
The lack of an announced suspect description made witness information particularly important in the first hours of the investigation. Detectives were seeking information from anyone who was on Grant Road around the time of the shooting and may have seen the vehicles before, during or immediately after the gunfire.
The 5-year-old had not been publicly identified in the initial information reviewed Sunday. Authorities also had not announced whether additional forensic testing or evidence had produced a description of the firearm or the person who fired it.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office continued investigating the shooting Sunday. Anyone identified as a suspect would remain accused unless and until charges are filed and proven in court, and investigators had not publicly named any person as responsible for the child’s death.
