Counseling and added law enforcement were provided after 15-year-old Royce Witchet was fatally shot near the campus following dismissal.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Students at Westfield High School returned to campus with added law enforcement and support services Wednesday as the Spring ISD community mourned 15-year-old Royce Witchet, who died after being shot near the school following dismissal a day earlier.
The district’s response unfolded as authorities announced that a 14-year-old had been arrested in connection with Witchet’s death. The suspect is believed to also attend Spring ISD, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Investigators have not disclosed possible charges, a motive or whether the two teenagers knew each other before the shooting.
The shooting happened Sept. 22 on a sidewalk near Westfield High School and the Spring ISD administration building on Ella Boulevard. Westfield dismissed students around 2:25 p.m., and authorities said calls about the shooting began coming in about 10 to 15 minutes later. Witchet was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.
Spring ISD said Westfield High School would provide counseling and additional resources to students and staff dealing with the loss. The district also said more law enforcement officers would be present throughout the district for the remainder of the week. Gonzalez said students and families should expect a stronger police presence around Westfield and the surrounding area in the days after the shooting.
Witchet’s mother, Rhonda Churchwell, described her son as a loving and funny teenager with close ties to his family. She said he loved his siblings, sports and music and often took on a protective role. Churchwell called him her “heart” while speaking about the loss of her middle child.
The shooting did not occur inside Westfield High School. Authorities said there were not many students on campus at the time, but investigators believed people who had been in the area following dismissal could have information important to the case. Detectives sought videos, messages and other material that could help establish what happened before the shooting.
Investigators have been cautious about describing the events that preceded the gunfire. Gonzalez initially said there appeared to have been some type of interaction involving Witchet and another male, but he later stressed that investigators had not determined exactly what occurred. Authorities have not established a motive or publicly explained whether other people were present during the confrontation.
The 14-year-old’s arrest Wednesday ended the immediate search for a suspect, but it did not resolve the broader investigation. The sheriff’s office has not publicly disclosed what evidence led detectives to the teen or what criminal allegations may follow. Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have not released his name.
For Westfield High School, the days following the shooting have centered on mourning, student support and an increased security presence while investigators continue working to determine why Witchet was killed. The district said its support resources would remain available as students and staff process the death.
