WOODBRIDGE, N.J. – A man from Woodbridge, Vito Nigro, was sentenced to 27 years in state prison by Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Colleen Flynn for the aggravated manslaughter of his ex-wife Giorgina Cimino Nigro, in their shared home. Nigro would become eligible for parole after serving 85% of the sentence, followed by five years of parole supervision upon release. Tragically, Nigro later died in custody at Northern State Prison in Newark in April 2020.
Looking back at historical events in Central Jersey, five years ago, in 2019, Governor Phil Murphy announced that New Jersey residents in treatment for opioid addiction would be allowed to use medical marijuana. Additionally, more than 200 residents attended a hearing for a mixed-use development application in East Brunswick, while the Monster Jam Triple Threat Series was held at the Prudential Center in Newark. Ten years earlier, publicized events such as the grand opening of Ashland’s global research facility and the 56th Grammy Awards, where New Jersey natives were up for honors. In 1999, statistics revealed an increase in school violence, vandalism, weapons, and substance abuse, and Governor Christie Whitman presented a record budget with a focus on property tax relief.
Moving back five decades to 1974, rivals Rutgers and Delaware clashed in a men’s college basketball game, resulting in a win for Rutgers. Additionally, the Edison Valley Players began its season with a Neil Simon comedy, and the unemployment rate in New Jersey rose above 7%. Going further back to 1924, a cafe owner in Linden Township was found guilty of violating an act, and the movie “Just Tony” was shown at the Plainfield Theatre. The article also reported on various local incidents, including a fire at the home of William C. Chapman and a theft at the Pennsylvania Company in Jamesburg, among other events during that time.
