JOLIET, IL – A series of violent incidents involving a 34-year-old homeless man, Omar Mejia, has left a 60-year-old victim hospitalized in Joliet. The victim was taken to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center for injuries sustained during an attack at the Daybreak Shelter. Mejia has been arrested by Joliet police in connection to two separate violent incidents on East Cass Street, facing charges including aggravated battery, battery, and obstructing a peace officer. Additionally, he has been booked on charges of aggravated domestic battery.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, Mejia’s violent behavior dates back to an incident on February 27. A warrant for his arrest was issued on April 4 on the aggravated domestic battery charge.

On April 18, another violent encounter involving Mejia occurred at the Daybreak Shelter. During an altercation in the cafeteria, Mejia shoved a 60-year-old man to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the floor. The victim was subsequently hospitalized for injuries. Joliet police also responded to a disturbance at a warehouse where Mejia had assaulted a man after refusing to leave the premises.

Following his arrest, Mejia was taken to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center due to a pre-existing injury he complained about. Despite initially refusing to follow commands at the hospital, Mejia was eventually secured and transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility after being processed at the Joliet Police Department.

The incidents involving Mejia have raised concerns about public safety in the community, prompting authorities to take swift action in ensuring the well-being of residents and addressing the issue of violence in the area. Mejia’s repeated violent behavior highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order and protecting vulnerable individuals in Joliet. The ongoing investigation into Mejia’s actions is crucial in holding him accountable for his offenses and preventing further harm to members of the community.
