Violent Attack on Nigerian Union Leaders in Abuja Trial Unfolds

Abuja, Nigeria – The President of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers delivered a harrowing testimony before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, detailing a violent attack he and other union leaders endured. Williams Akporeha recounted the events of November 1, 2023, when he, along with the union’s Secretary-General and the newly elected National Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers, were confronted by a group of 20 former union leaders.

The group, armed with clubs, iron bars, and stones, prevented Akporeha from entering the office premises in Utako, Abuja. Despite their attempts to investigate the situation, the former leaders verbally and physically assaulted them, accusing them of theft and claiming they did not belong there. Akporeha described the chaotic scene as he and his colleagues were severely beaten.

As the attack unfolded, Akporeha witnessed the defendants continuing to assault his colleagues, with one member rendered unconscious and bleeding heavily. The violent confrontation escalated, with the defendants even threatening to set the building on fire. Police intervention was eventually required to rescue Akporeha and bring the situation under control.

The defendants, facing charges of attempted murder, breach of peace, and assault, pleaded not guilty in court. The prosecution presented a petition from Akporeha detailing the incident, but challenges arose regarding its admissibility. The trial was subsequently adjourned for further proceedings.

The incident not only highlights the dangers faced by union leaders in Nigeria but also raises concerns about the safety and security of those in leadership positions within the petroleum and natural gas industry. The ongoing trial serves as a testament to the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for acts of violence and intimidation.
