Unspeakable Horror: Woman Attacked in Hate Crime Speaks Out Following Attacker’s Prison Sentence

New York City, NY – Vilma Kari, a 68-year-old woman, was the victim of a brutal hate crime in March 2021 when Brandon Elliot, 43, viciously assaulted her in Hell’s Kitchen. Elliot has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault as a hate crime and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Kari, who is Filipina, has spoken out for the first time since the attack and shared her experiences as Elliot was sentenced.

During the attack, Elliot was caught on surveillance video kicking Kari in the torso, knocking her to the ground, and then repeatedly kicking and stomping on her head and body. He also uttered hateful remarks, telling her “you don’t belong here.” Shockingly, two doormen witnessed the attack but did not intervene until after the suspect had fled. They were subsequently fired.

Since the attack, Kari’s physical injuries have healed, but she continues to grapple with mental and emotional trauma. She expressed that while she looks forward to complete healing, she is still cautious and fearful when venturing outside. Despite this, she has found support from her daughter, Liz Kari, who has not only helped her in her recovery process but has also started an organization to combat hate crimes against Asian-Americans.

The impact of Kari’s story has even reached the White House. Deputy Assistant to the President Erika Moritsugu has highlighted Kari’s example as a source of strength for other victims who may feel isolated in their fear. Kari’s bravery in speaking out has raised awareness and garnered a network of supporters around her, emphasizing that she is not alone in her experience.
