Two Found Dead Inside Sumter County Home After Shooting Report

Neighbors described an unusually large law enforcement response as investigators worked at a Drayton Drive residence Tuesday.

DALZELL, S.C. — Residents of a quiet Sumter County neighborhood watched their street fill with deputies and crime scene tape Tuesday after two people were found dead inside a nearby home following a reported shooting.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers received a report of a shooting at about 8:05 a.m. Aug. 11 at a home on Drayton Drive in the Dalzell area. Sheriff Anthony Dennis and deputies responded and found two people dead inside the residence.

For people living nearby, the law enforcement activity stood out in an area they described as typically calm. Bernard Gordon, who lives across the street, told local reporters that he looked over his fence after noticing authorities outside and saw roughly 20 patrol vehicles scattered along the block as crime scene tape went up.

Gordon said the neighborhood is ordinarily so quiet that sirens and emergency vehicles are uncommon. He also recalled being warmly greeted by the people living across the street when he and his wife first moved into the area, describing the scene Tuesday as a sharp change from the neighborhood’s usual routine.

Mary Lee, another resident in the area, said she learned about the deaths while she was at work after her husband called her. She said she later returned to the neighborhood and saw authorities at the home while residents nearby reacted emotionally to what had happened.

Lee described the people associated with the residence as familiar sights in the neighborhood over the years. She recalled seeing them walking around the area in the past and later spending more time at home, including outside near the garage and while doing yardwork.

The sheriff’s office released little information Tuesday about the circumstances of the shooting. Initial reports did not publicly identify the two people who died, explain what investigators believe happened inside the home or name a suspect. Authorities also did not announce an arrest in the information released that day.

The scene remained an active investigation as deputies worked to determine the sequence of events that led to the deaths. The sheriff’s office said the case was in its early stages and additional information would be released when available.

For neighbors, the unanswered questions followed an unusually visible police presence on a street they had known as peaceful. As of the latest verified reporting, authorities had not released the victims’ identities, a motive or further details about the circumstances of the shooting.
