Detectives were trying to establish whether the five masked suspects intended a robbery or deliberately targeted the wounded 29-year-old man.
HOUSTON, Texas — Neighborhood surveillance video became a key focus of a Houston police investigation Wednesday after five masked people confronted a couple at a southeast Houston home and a 29-year-old man was critically wounded by gunfire.
Police were working to identify the group and determine why its members went to the home in the 9900 block of Tiltree Street around midnight Aug. 12. Investigators had not established whether the encounter was an attempted robbery or a targeted confrontation. No suspects had been identified, and police said the group fled the property on foot after the shooting.
The man and his 22-year-old girlfriend had been sitting together in the garage with the door open before the group arrived, according to police. Investigators said five masked people approached along the side of the yard and moved toward the front of the property. The first person who entered the garage was carrying a firearm and began yelling at the man.
The woman ran into the house soon after the confrontation began, police said. She locked herself in another room and hid, leaving investigators with limited information about what was said between her boyfriend and the people who entered the garage. The other four members of the group followed the first person inside, and police said a fight then broke out.
Gunfire erupted during the confrontation. Investigators said more than 20 shots were fired and later recovered two firearms along with numerous shell casings at the scene. Police had not determined who fired each weapon or whether the wounded man fired during the encounter, leaving the sequence of the shooting under investigation.
The 29-year-old was shot in the neck, arm and side and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said he was expected to survive. His girlfriend was not hurt. Because emergency crews quickly transported the man for treatment, detectives were not immediately able to obtain a full statement from him about the events inside the garage.
After the five suspects ran from the property, the woman left the room where she had been hiding and found her boyfriend wounded, police said. She called for help, while neighbors who had heard the disturbance came outside and tried to assist. Investigators had not disclosed evidence showing how the suspects arrived in the neighborhood before approaching on foot.
Detectives were seeking video from residential surveillance systems near the home in hopes that cameras recorded the group before or after the confrontation. Such footage could help investigators establish the suspects’ route through the neighborhood and provide additional identifying information that witnesses inside the home could not give police.
Police had released only limited descriptions of the five people by Wednesday morning, saying they were masked and that at least some appeared to be men. Investigators had not confirmed the sex of every person in the group, identified a motive or announced any arrests. The search for evidence and suspects remained active.
