Two children found frozen to death in Detroit van

DETROIT, MI – In a heartbreaking turn of events, two young children were found dead in a van parked in a Detroit casino garage, frozen amid the harsh winter cold. The discovery has left the community in shock and authorities in the midst of a critical investigation.

The children, aged 2 and 9, were discovered in the family’s van at the Hollywood Casino in Greektown. The vehicle, which had been serving as the family’s living space, became a deathtrap when it lost heat, either due to an empty gas tank or a mechanical failure.

A family member was called to the scene by the children’s mother, who noticed the children were unresponsive. Despite efforts to rush them to the Children’s Hospital, they were pronounced dead upon arrival. The chilling circumstances of their deaths have prompted police to detain the mother for further questioning.

The family’s dire situation was underscored by the scant clothing the children wore; the younger child in a t-shirt and pull-up, and the older in a t-shirt and joggers. With only a couple of blankets for warmth, the children succumbed to the freezing temperatures. The other three children in the family were also evaluated at the hospital and have since been placed under the care of protective services.

Detroit police are delving into the family’s history, noting that they were once residents of an east side apartment before transitioning to life in their vehicle. Investigators are also scrutinizing security footage to ascertain whether the family had previously been at the casino site.

The city of Detroit offers resources for those without shelter, including a helpline and emergency beds, highlighting that support is available for families in crisis. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by the homeless, particularly during the winter months.

As the investigation unfolds, community members and city officials are left to reflect on how such a tragedy could have been averted and what measures can be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
