Two Cars Crash Into Kroger, Killing 49-Year-Old Woman

The crash happened Wednesday afternoon at the Wesley Chapel Road grocery store.

DECATUR, Ga. — A woman was killed and several others were taken for care after a two-vehicle crash sent cars into a Kroger building Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The DeKalb County medical examiner identified the woman who died as 49-year-old Giselle Perry. DeKalb County police are investigating the crash at the Wesley Chapel Road store, where one driver was hospitalized and two juveniles were evaluated after being on the sidewalk nearby.

DeKalb County Fire and Rescue Capt. Jaeson Daniels said the crash began when one vehicle struck another. The impact pushed both vehicles into the side of the Kroger. Perry, who was in the second vehicle, died at the scene, officials said.

The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash was taken to a hospital with injuries, Daniels said. Officials did not release that driver’s name or condition. The two juveniles also were taken to a hospital for medical evaluations. Their conditions were not immediately released.

Mawakana White, who witnessed the crash, said the vehicle appeared to be traveling fast before the impact. “She ran directly into the car,” White said. White called the scene heartbreaking and said people in the area were shocked by how quickly the crash unfolded.

Investigators have not said whether speed, a medical issue, a mechanical problem or another factor played a role. Police also have not said whether any charges are expected. Officials said the case remained under investigation Thursday.

The crash brought police, fire crews and medical responders to a busy grocery store parking lot. The Kroger is located in a commercial area of Decatur, where shoppers and pedestrians were nearby when the vehicles hit the building.

Authorities had released few details beyond the victim’s name by Thursday morning. Police are expected to continue reviewing witness accounts, scene evidence and any available video from the shopping center.
