Masked Intruder Killed After Returning To Home, Deputies Say

Officials said two children and three adults were inside the home when the confrontation began.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Detectives are reviewing a deadly shooting at a Spring Creek Oaks home after a homeowner said a masked intruder entered through a back door before dawn Wednesday.

The case began as a reported break-in and ended with an unidentified man dead near a trail behind the home. Harris County authorities said the homeowner was questioned, witnesses inside the house were interviewed, and prosecutors will decide whether the shooting leads to charges.

Deputies were called to the 16900 block of Spring Creek Oaks Court around 5:45 a.m. Investigators said the homeowner told them he woke up to find a man inside the home wearing a mask and gloves. A fight followed and moved outside. Officials said the suspect left, then returned to the property, where the homeowner got a handgun and fired. The constable’s office said the man was later found with a gunshot wound.

The wounded man ran from the backyard and jumped a fence, investigators said. Deputies later found him near a walking trail behind the home, close to a bayou. EMS responded, but the man died at the scene. Authorities had not released his name or age by Wednesday afternoon. They also had not said whether he knew anyone at the home.

Officials said five people were inside the residence at the time, including two children, ages 12 and 13. No other injuries were reported. Investigators said they found no obvious signs of forced entry, though the back door remained a key part of the inquiry. Detectives were also trying to confirm the order of events between the first fight and the later backyard confrontation.

The homeowner was detained while deputies gathered statements and evidence. Authorities said that step was part of the investigation and did not mean charges had been filed. The case will be presented to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which will review the facts and decide whether the shooting was legally justified or whether charges are warranted.

The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to the northwest Harris County neighborhood near Klein. Deputies searched the area behind the home after the suspect fled and focused part of the scene near the trail and bayou. Officials had not released details on any surveillance video, 911 calls or evidence recovered from inside the house.

The investigation remained active Wednesday. Authorities had not announced charges, released the suspect’s identity or provided a final ruling on the homeowner’s actions.
