Turtle Meat Triggers Fatalities on Pemba Island: Chelonitoxism Outbreak Causes Deaths and Hospitalizations

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – A tragic incident unfolded on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, where several people were either killed or fell ill after consuming sea turtle meat. The local authorities reported that eight children and one adult lost their lives, while 78 others were admitted to hospitals. Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy in Zanzibar, but this time, it led to a deadly outbreak of chelonitoxism, a type of food poisoning.

According to Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer of Mkoani District, the adult who passed away on Friday was the mother of one of the deceased children. The fatal meal of turtle meat was consumed on a Tuesday, resulting in tragic consequences for the community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of consuming certain types of food without caution.

Sadly, this is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred in Zanzibar. In November 2021, seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, lost their lives on Pemba Island after ingesting turtle meat. The recurrence of these incidents highlights the need for heightened awareness and education on the risks associated with consuming certain types of wildlife.

Hamza Hassan Juma, leading a disaster management team in Zanzibar, issued a warning to the public, urging them to refrain from consuming sea turtles. The authorities are working diligently to prevent further tragedies and raise awareness about the potential dangers of consuming certain species of wildlife. This effort is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of the local population.

Laboratory tests confirmed that all the victims had consumed sea turtle meat, underscoring the direct link between the consumption of this delicacy and the tragic outcomes that ensued. The need for stricter regulations and enforcement regarding the consumption of endangered species like sea turtles is evident in light of these unfortunate events.

As the community in Zanzibar grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident, there is a collective call for greater vigilance and caution when it comes to dietary choices. The tragic consequences of consuming sea turtle meat serve as a somber reminder of the importance of sustainable and responsible practices in food consumption. Ultimately, raising awareness and enforcing regulations are crucial steps in preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
