Trial Set for 69-Year-Old Man Accused of Murdering Retired Postmistress in Wisbech

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire – A 69-year-old man is set to face trial next year for the murder of retired postmistress Una Crown, whose tragic death shook the town in 2013. The 86-year-old widow was discovered in her bungalow in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, lying in a pool of blood with her clothing burned.

According to a post-mortem examination, Mrs. Crown had succumbed to stab wounds to her neck and chest. David Newton, the accused in this heinous crime, made an appearance at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday. Newton, sporting an earring in his left ear and clad in black glasses and a dark jumper, sat in the secure dock of the courtroom as two custody officers observed from behind.

Newton, residing in Magazine Close in Wisbech, spoke only to confirm his identity during the brief court proceedings. He was taken into custody on Monday and has yet to enter a plea. The judge overseeing the case, Mark Bishop, scheduled a provisional trial date for January 6 next year, with an estimated duration of four weeks.

Initially believed to be an accident, Mrs. Crown’s death was soon deemed a murder following the discovery of her body in her home on Magazine Lane on January 13, 2013. Newton remains in custody until a plea hearing scheduled for May 23 at the same court. The community continues to mourn the loss of Mrs. Crown and awaits justice to be served in the upcoming trial.
