TEWKSBURY, Massachusetts – As the 52nd anniversary of the Tewksbury Gas Explosion approaches on February 9, 2024, the Tewksbury Fire Department continues to honor the memory of the three men who lost their lives in the tragic event. This devastating explosion occurred in 1972 when a gas delivery vehicle accidentally struck a pipe at the Chapman Road liquified natural gas facility, leading to a massive blast that shook the community. In the aftermath, the town has made significant strides in safety improvements and continues to hold public remembrances every five years.
According to Fire Chief H.L. Hinton of Andover, the explosion was described as lighting up the sky like daylight, with a fireball that lasted for approximately 10 to 15 seconds. The impact was so significant that pilots landing at Logan Airport reported seeing the blast. The lives lost in the explosion included Tewksbury firefighter William John McAllister, delivery truck driver Arthur Sutcliffe of Lowell, and Billerica Fire Captain Donald Schultz, who later passed away from complications related to his injuries.
In the months following the explosion, the community mourned the loss of Tewksbury firefighter Captain Frederick Millett, whose death was attributed to complications from injuries sustained in the blast. Additionally, several others suffered burns, injuries, or succumbed to their injuries in the aftermath. The response to the tragedy was a display of heroism, with multiple fire departments from surrounding communities providing mutual aid and support.
In the wake of this tragic event, significant safety improvements were implemented, such as the installation of special shut-off valves, the addition of protective gear for firefighters, and stricter construction protocols for concrete poles in front of unprotected intake valves. These measures were crucial in ensuring the safety of the community and first responders.
