CICERO, Ill. — A shooting that erupted during a supposed online marketplace transaction on Wednesday left a teenager dead and another person injured, according to local authorities. The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of South 58th Avenue.
Investigators revealed that the two teenagers had met to complete the sale of an item they had arranged through a social media platform. However, the exchange took a violent turn when the seller attempted to leave without finalizing the transaction. As he began to walk away, the other teen confronted him, leading to a struggle for the item.
Witnesses reported that a relative of the seller, who had accompanied him, exited their vehicle during the confrontation. In a sudden escalation, the relative was shot twice by the assailant. Responding to the threat, the seller’s relative returned fire, wounding the teenager who had initiated the robbery.
The injured relative was subsequently transported to Loyola University Medical Center, where medical staff stabilized his condition. Meanwhile, the suspected robber sought treatment at Rush Oak Park Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as of Wednesday evening. They emphasized the importance of safety when engaging in transactions facilitated through social media. To that end, authorities recommend that individuals complete such exchanges within the secure confines of the Cicero police station.
This incident underscores the growing concerns regarding safety during online sales, prompting officials to remind the community of the risks involved and to advocate for secure meeting locations. As the investigation unfolds, police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.
