Tragedy Strikes Indiana as Sheriff’s Deputy Killed While Assisting Stranded Motorist on Interstate 69

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Delaware County community is in mourning following the tragic death of a sheriff’s deputy who was struck by a vehicle while assisting a motorist on Wednesday. Corporal Blake Reynolds, a four-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, died after his patrol car was hit while he was outside providing assistance to a stranded truck driver on Interstate 69.

According to investigators, Reynolds had positioned his vehicle behind a disabled semi-truck to offer protection when another northbound truck lost control. The collision involved both the deputy’s patrol car and the parked semi. Despite immediate efforts to save him at the scene, Reynolds succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Scott Keegan detailed the circumstances of the fatal incident. “The semi was partially on the roadway, so the deputy took a proactive approach to keep the driver safe,” Keegan explained, noting the unpredictable nature of the situation. Tragically, as Reynolds aided the motorist, he became a victim in the very effort to protect others.

Reynolds was not only recognized for his commitment to duty but was also described as a leader and a dedicated officer. Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley reflected on Reynolds’ impact, stating that he “quickly distinguished himself through his hard work, professionalism, and leadership.” His loss is felt deeply by his colleagues and the greater community, as those who worked alongside him remember a devoted public servant.

Married in June 2025, Reynolds’ personal life was also marked by dedication, including his service in the Army Reserve. For many, the outpouring of grief reflects not only a loss of life but the loss of a beloved member of the community who served with pride and passion.

The sheriff’s office has emphasized the void left by Reynolds’ passing, describing it as an “immeasurable loss” not just to his family and fellow officers but also to the community he protected. As authorities continue to investigate the accident, the shock of this tragedy resonates, reminding residents of the risks first responders face daily.

As tributes continue to pour in from both friends and community members, the legacy of Corporal Blake Reynolds will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those he touched through his service.
