Kanker, India — A father and son tragically lost their lives in a violent bear attack while collecting firewood in the forests of Chhattisgarh. Suklal Darro, 45, and his 22-year-old son, Ajju Kureti, were engaging in what should have been a routine outing when the encounter turned deadly.
The incident occurred when a rabid sloth bear attacked the pair, leading to a gruesome scene. Forest ranger Narayan Yadav, who attempted to intervene, was also seriously injured during the fray. A video of the attack captured the bear charging at Yadav, who was heard urging others not to flee as the animal approached. The footage shows the bear overpowering the ranger, inflicting serious injuries.
While Yadav managed to escape, he was taken to the hospital in critical condition with severe injuries to his hands. Unfortunately, Suklal Darro succumbed to his injuries en route to medical help, while Ajju Kureti was pronounced dead at the scene. The attack was so harrowing that rescuers required heavy machinery to retrieve Kureti’s body from the forest.
Forest officials suspect that the bear’s aggressive behavior might be linked to rabies, a condition that can escalate aggression in wildlife. This incident follows a similar attack in August, where another man was killed and two others were injured by a sloth bear in the same state.
Sloth bears are primarily found in India and are known for their aggressive nature. Over the past two decades, they have been involved in numerous fatal encounters with humans, making them the species responsible for the highest number of human fatalities among bear species. Despite their typical diet of fruit, termites, and bees, sloth bears can become incredibly dangerous, exhibiting strong jaws and large canine teeth when provoked.
Efforts to protect sloth bears are ongoing, as they face threats from habitat loss and poaching. Their plight is compounded by the close interaction with human populations, which can lead to conflicts. Furthermore, many sloth bears are subjected to cruel treatment when captured for entertainment or as performing animals.
Wildlife experts note that incidents like these underline the profound need for understanding and managing human-wildlife interactions, especially in areas where their habitats overlap. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by wild animals when their territories are encroached upon.
