A Memphis woman faces two aggravated assault counts after the early Wednesday shooting.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A tow truck driver was hospitalized Wednesday after being shot during a vehicle repossession near Macon Road and Highland Street, and a 26-year-old woman was later charged, police said.
Memphis police said Iyasha Chapman was detained after the shooting and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. The driver was taken to Regional One Health in non-critical condition. Authorities have not released the driver’s name or a detailed account of what led to the gunfire.
The shooting happened in Highland Heights, where Macon Road runs through a mix of homes, apartments and commercial areas near Highland Street. Police said the driver was in the process of repossessing a vehicle when the shooting occurred. Officers responded to the scene, secured the area and began gathering information from those nearby. Early reports did not list any additional victims.
The charges against Chapman move the case from the initial police response into the court process. She is expected to appear in court Thursday. Officials had not released a bond amount in the first updates, and it was not immediately clear whether she had an attorney listed in court records.
Several key details remain unknown, including whether police recovered a gun, whether surveillance video captured the shooting and what statements were given at the scene. Police also have not said whether the repossession involved Chapman’s vehicle or another person’s vehicle. The aggravated assault charges show investigators believe at least two people were threatened or harmed in the incident.
The case adds to a series of violent calls handled by Memphis police across the city, but officials described this shooting as tied to a specific repossession encounter. The next milestone is Chapman’s Thursday court appearance, where more information about the charges and case schedule may become public.
