Toddler Killed After Car Enters Beachwood Restaurant Patio

A 3-year-old girl died after being struck outside City Barbeque on Father’s Day.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Two people have been charged after a Father’s Day crash killed a 3-year-old girl outside City Barbeque at the Pavilion Shopping Center, where police said a vehicle crossed a curb and entered the patio.

The death has drawn a criminal investigation in Cuyahoga County and closed the Beachwood restaurant for an unknown period. Police said 18-year-old Jasmine McFadden, of Euclid, was driving through the shopping center parking lot when the vehicle entered the outdoor dining space and struck the child.

The crash was reported around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21. The girl had been eating outside with family members when she was hit. Emergency crews took her to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, where she died. In one 911 exchange reported by local news outlets, a caller said the vehicle hit a rail near City Barbeque before the child was struck. Another caller told dispatchers the child was 3 and bleeding.

Authorities have not released the child’s name. Police said Jasmine McFadden was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. Court records cited by local news outlets said she did not have a driver’s license. She appeared in Shaker Heights Municipal Court on Monday, June 22, where a judge set bond at $100,000 and sent the case to Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

Police also charged Kenneth McFadden, 61, of Euclid, with obstructing official business and wrongful entrustment. Investigators said he was seated in the front passenger seat and first told officers that he was the driver. He is scheduled to be arraigned July 13 in Shaker Heights Municipal Court. Police have not publicly said what relationship, if any, the two defendants have to each other.

The crash happened at a shopping center in Beachwood, an eastern Cleveland suburb with restaurants, stores and parking areas near Richmond Road and Chagrin Boulevard. Outdoor dining areas often sit close to curbs and parking lanes in retail centers. Police have not said whether speed, impairment, distraction or a vehicle problem played a role.

City Barbeque said it was cooperating with investigators and focused on supporting its team and community. The company said the safety of guests, workers and neighbors remains a priority. The restaurant has remained closed since the crash, and corporate officials have not announced when it will reopen.

Beachwood police said investigators are examining all factors that may have contributed to the crash. The department also said the incident affected the child’s family, witnesses, first responders, restaurant employees and others who were present.

The investigation remains active, with Jasmine McFadden’s case moving to county court and Kenneth McFadden due in municipal court July 13.
