Teenage Brothers Remanded in Custody After Alleged Assault in Longford

Longford, Ireland – Two teenage brothers were remanded to Oberstown Children’s Detention Centre after being charged with an alleged assault on a 17-year-old boy in County Longford. The incident left the victim hospitalized with serious head injuries.

The 17-year-old and 16-year-old siblings, whose identities remain undisclosed for legal reasons, appeared in Longford District Court following the assault at Edgeworthstown Train Station. Detective Garda Orla Geraghty presented evidence of arrest, charge, and caution before Judge Bernadette Owens.

During the hearing, the brothers were accused of Section 3 assault causing harm and chose to remain silent in response. Their defense solicitor, BrĂd Mimnagh, indicated that a bail application would be made at a later stage, while Inspector Declan McGlynn confirmed the State’s intention to oppose bail.

Given the seriousness of the charges, Judge Bernadette Owens decided to remand both teenagers into custody until their next hearing on April 16. Additionally, she ordered that the older brother, who has a preexisting cardiac condition, receives necessary medical attention while in detention. The investigation continues as authorities gather more evidence related to the assault.

The victim’s condition remains a concern, and the community awaits further developments in the case. As the legal process unfolds, the impact of such incidents on families, the justice system, and society at large becomes increasingly evident.
