Police said the gunman fired several rounds before running from Rosedale Avenue.
BRONX, N.Y. — A 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg while sitting in a parked car Wednesday morning near a Bronx housing complex, and police were still looking for the gunman Thursday.
The shooting was reported about 7:30 a.m. at Seward and Rosedale avenues in Soundview, police said. Officers found the teen with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and was expected to survive.
Police said the boy had been heading to school when the suspect approached the parked car and opened fire. Several rounds were fired, and one struck the teen. The suspect then ran north on Rosedale Avenue, according to the NYPD. Police did not say whether the shooter arrived on foot or had been waiting nearby before the attack.
The NYPD released a photo of the man wanted for questioning and said he was last seen wearing a black sweater and black T-shirt. Investigators had not released his name or age. Police also had not said whether the shooting was tied to a dispute, a school matter or another conflict. The victim’s name was withheld because he is 14.
The shooting happened near the Soundview Houses, a large public housing development in the southeastern Bronx. The area includes apartment buildings, playgrounds, parking lots and busy neighborhood routes used by students in the morning. The timing placed the shooting in the middle of a weekday school commute, when residents and families were outside.
Detectives were working to identify the suspect and trace his path after he left the scene. Police were expected to examine security cameras from nearby buildings and streets, collect ballistic evidence and speak with people who were in the car or near the intersection. No charges had been filed as of Thursday because no arrest had been announced.
The case comes after other recent attacks involving teenagers in New York City. Police have investigated shootings and assaults in parks, trains and neighborhood streets, raising concern among families and city officials. In this case, police said the Bronx teen was stable after treatment, but the suspect remained at large.
The investigation remained active Thursday as police sought the man seen in the released image and worked to determine why the teen was shot.
