Drive-By Shooting Leaves One Dead in Southeast Houston

Investigators said two scenes in the same neighborhood may be connected as detectives search for suspects.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police spent Thursday evening investigating a fatal shooting in southeast Houston after gunfire near a neighborhood park killed one person and injured another during what authorities described as a possible drive-by attack.

Officers responded around 3:56 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the 8700 block of Blackhawk Ridge Lane near Great Hawk Lane. When police arrived, officers located two shooting victims near the park area. One person died at the scene, while another victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Investigators said both victims were believed to be male teenagers. Authorities secured the area and called homicide detectives to begin collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Police said the surviving victim was expected to recover, though investigators continued trying to determine exactly how the confrontation began and who opened fire.

Sky cameras above the neighborhood showed a large police response stretching across nearby streets as investigators marked evidence and blocked vehicle traffic. Detectives said early witness statements pointed to some type of dispute before the shooting occurred. Authorities also said they believed the violence may have involved a drive-by shooting, though details about the suspect vehicle remained unclear Thursday night. Residents reported hearing several gunshots in rapid succession before emergency crews arrived. Officers moved through the area searching for surveillance footage from doorbell cameras and nearby homes that may have captured vehicles or people leaving the scene immediately after the attack.

Houston police later confirmed the investigation expanded to a second location near Kingsway and Landfall. Officials said evidence collected there could help detectives establish a timeline leading up to the shooting. Investigators did not explain whether the second scene involved damaged vehicles, witnesses or additional evidence connected to the gunfire. Authorities also did not release information about possible suspects or whether anyone had been detained for questioning. Detectives remained cautious about discussing motive, saying interviews with witnesses and the surviving victim were still ongoing. Police officials said the homicide division would continue working overnight to compare physical evidence from both scenes.

The fatal shooting added to a series of violent incidents investigated across Houston in recent months as police continue efforts to address gun violence in residential areas. Southeast Houston neighborhoods near Monroe Road include densely populated apartment communities, parks and family housing developments where daytime violence can quickly disrupt surrounding streets. Investigators often rely heavily on neighborhood surveillance systems in cases involving moving vehicles or drive-by attacks because witnesses may only catch brief glimpses of suspects. On Thursday, officers were seen going door to door asking residents whether home security systems recorded activity around the time of the shooting.

Authorities said the identity of the person killed would not be released until relatives had been notified. The Harris County medical examiner is expected to formally determine the cause and manner of death following an autopsy. Detectives said investigators would continue analyzing shell casings, reviewing witness accounts and tracking possible surveillance footage in hopes of identifying suspects. If arrests are made, prosecutors with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office could later review evidence for potential homicide charges. Police also urged anyone with direct information about the shooting to contact investigators as the case develops.

Neighbors watched quietly from sidewalks Thursday evening as patrol vehicles and crime scene vans remained parked near the entrance to the park. Yellow tape surrounded sections of the area while detectives photographed the scene and spoke with residents. Some families stayed indoors as flashing emergency lights reflected across nearby homes. “We are still gathering information,” a homicide investigator said during a media briefing near the scene. Officers remained stationed throughout the neighborhood late into the evening as investigators worked under portable lights to document evidence before reopening the streets.

Houston police said the investigation remains active and additional information could be released once detectives complete interviews and forensic testing tied to both scenes. No arrests had been announced by late Thursday night.
