The 17-year-old regularly cut hair from a nearby garage before he was found fatally shot in an alley, police said.
PLANO, Texas — A fatal shooting in a residential Plano alley has unsettled neighbors after police said a 17-year-old who regularly cut hair from a nearby garage was found with a gunshot wound and declared dead at the scene.
Plano police officers and Plano Fire-Rescue personnel responded at about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 to the 900 block of Middle Cove Drive. First responders found the teenager in an alley behind a home, turning an otherwise ordinary residential area into an active crime scene as detectives began investigating his death.
The shooting stood out to residents because of its location in a neighborhood where homes back onto alleys used for garages, vehicles and everyday activity. One resident, Ashley Chiechi, told FOX 4 she was walking her dog when she heard a woman screaming and later saw emergency personnel trying to aid the victim.
Chiechi described the shooting as sad and surprising, saying the neighborhood had been quiet during the time she had lived there. Her account provided a glimpse of the confusion around the scene as police and fire-rescue crews converged on the area Tuesday evening.
Police said the teenager regularly cut hair from the garage near the home where he was found. Authorities have not said whether that work had any connection to the shooting, and investigators have not publicly detailed what the teenager was doing immediately before he was wounded.
The victim’s identity was initially withheld while authorities notified his next of kin. Police later confirmed that he was a 17-year-old male, but reports available after the shooting did not publicly identify him by name.
Investigators have identified a person of interest who knew the teenager, according to police information provided to FOX 4. Authorities have not released that person’s identity or explained the nature of the relationship. Police also have not publicly disclosed a possible motive.
The Plano Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating. The area around Middle Cove Drive and Branch Hollow was temporarily closed to through traffic as detectives examined the scene and worked to determine the sequence of events surrounding the shooting.
Police spokesperson Jerry Minton said the department wanted the teenager and his family to receive justice. Detectives have continued seeking information from the public while trying to answer central questions about what happened in the alley and why the teenager was shot.
The investigation remains active, with the motive and other circumstances surrounding the shooting still publicly unresolved. Plano police have asked anyone with information to contact the department as detectives continue working the case.
