Police have not identified the 18-year-old woman or said what led to the fatal shooting inside a North Monitor Avenue residence.
CHICAGO — Detectives were working Thursday to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of an 18-year-old woman who was found shot inside a Belmont Cragin-area home Wednesday night.
Chicago police said officers were called about 8:53 p.m. Oct. 14 to the 2700 block of North Monitor Avenue. They found the woman inside a residence with a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center, where she later died.
What happened before officers arrived remained unclear Thursday. Police had not publicly explained what led to the shooting, identified a possible suspect or announced an arrest. Authorities also had not released the woman’s name.
The limited information released by police leaves investigators with several questions about the events inside the residence. Authorities have not said whether the woman was alone when she was shot, whether anyone else was injured or whether detectives have determined how the shooting unfolded.
Police activity continued outside the home after the woman was taken to the hospital as investigators gathered evidence. Authorities have not publicly described what evidence was recovered or indicated whether the shooting was believed to have been intentional, accidental or connected to another event.
Officials also have not said whether the residence was the woman’s home or disclosed her connection to the property. No information about a possible motive had been released as detectives continued examining the case.
The woman’s death followed the initial emergency response Wednesday night, when she was transported from the Northwest Side to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition. Police later confirmed that she had died from her injuries.
Area Five detectives are handling the investigation. As of Thursday, police had not announced an arrest or released additional information about who may have been present at the residence when the shooting occurred.
