MIAMI, Fla. — A 17-year-old boy died Saturday after he was shot overnight in a Miami neighborhood near Miami Jackson Senior High School, authorities said, as police continued investigating what led to the gunfire.
Miami Fire Rescue crews were dispatched at about 1:52 a.m. Saturday to the 3700 block of Northwest 23rd Court after receiving a report of a person with a gunshot wound. First responders found the teenager and transported him to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in extremely critical condition. He later died from his injuries Saturday night.
The teenager’s death marked a significant development in an investigation that began before dawn and continued through the day. Authorities had not publicly identified the boy or released details about the circumstances that led to the shooting. Police also had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect in the available reporting.
A 45-year-old woman was also taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for an evaluation after the shooting, according to Miami Fire Rescue. Officials said she had no reported injuries. Authorities did not immediately explain why she was transported or whether she witnessed the shooting.
Police closed Northwest 23rd Court near Northwest 38th Street while officers, detectives and crime scene investigators worked in the area. Police tape was placed around a home that investigators appeared to be examining, and investigators were seen moving equipment into and out of the scene.
Local 10 News reported that a clear evidence bag containing what appeared to be a gun was visible at the scene. Authorities had not publicly said whether the object was connected to the shooting, who it belonged to or what role, if any, it may have played. Investigators had not announced findings from any recovered evidence.
Residents in the area described hearing several gunshots, followed by yelling and the sounds of people running. One neighbor told Local 10 News that he heard about seven shots. Another resident said security-camera footage had captured activity in the area but later said the video had been deleted and could not be provided.
The shooting occurred near Miami Jackson Senior High School, but authorities had not announced any connection between the school and the incident. The reported location was in the area of Northwest 23rd Court between Northwest 36th and 38th streets.
Police had not released information about a possible motive or the events immediately preceding the shooting as of Sunday. The investigation remained active, with key questions about who fired the shots and what caused the confrontation still unresolved.
