Teen Brothers Charged After Haywood Mall Shooting

Police said the June 13 shooting followed an argument among people who knew each other.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Two teen brothers have been charged after a June 13 shooting at Haywood Mall wounded two people and sent shoppers and workers fleeing or sheltering inside stores, Greenville police said.

Police identified the brothers as 17-year-old Kamari Stephone Walker and 18-year-old Kalief Walker. Kamari Walker was charged as an adult with high and aggravated assault and battery. Kalief Walker was charged with breach of peace high and aggravated, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of a stolen pistol.

The shooting happened about 1:11 p.m. in the plaza between Macy’s and Belk, where an officer assigned to the mall heard gunfire, police said. The officer found a woman who had been shot in the foot, then found a man with wounds to his shoulder and neck inside Belk. Police later said the man was Kalief Walker. Both injured people were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Investigators said the shooting was not random. Police said it appeared to begin as an argument among people who knew each other before gunfire broke out. The woman who was shot appeared to be an uninvolved bystander. Several people were detained as officers cleared the mall with help from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. Police said no other shots were fired after officers arrived and the scene was contained.

Kamari Walker was denied bond, court officials said. Kalief Walker was released from the hospital Friday before his arrest, and bond court set his total bond at $15,000, with $5,000 on each charge. Police said Kamari Walker has other charges that were not released because of his age.

The shooting renewed concern about safety at the mall after earlier disturbances. In May 2025, a fight in the food court caused panic when loud noises were mistaken for gunfire. In June 2025, another fight moved into the parking lot and a shot was fired. In December 2025, a minor was arrested after police said they found a gun inside the mall.

One shopper who was inside Victoria’s Secret said employees checked on customers before police led people out in a line with their hands raised. Greenville police said they would review the response with other agencies and work with mall management on security measures, including added off-duty officers.

The investigation remains open as detectives review the shooting, the weapon charge and the roles of others who were at the mall. No next court date was immediately listed in the reports.
