Suspected Intruder Killed After Entering 80-Year-Old Man’s Home

Detectives are looking for surveillance video and witnesses as they reconstruct Tuesday’s deadly encounter at a Misty Hollow Drive home.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Investigators are searching for surveillance video and witnesses as they work to determine what happened before a man described as a suspected intruder was fatally shot at an elderly homeowner’s northwest Harris County residence Tuesday.

The evidence-gathering effort follows a shooting in the 15700 block of Misty Hollow Drive that left one man dead and an 80-year-old homeowner unharmed. Deputies were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m. Nov. 3 after a report of a burglar at the property. Authorities have released only a preliminary account of the encounter, leaving the precise sequence of events under investigation.

Sgt. Sidney Miller of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said investigators were looking for surveillance footage and people who may have witnessed activity connected to the shooting. The homeowner told deputies he encountered the man inside his home or on his property before he fired, according to information released by authorities.

Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office responded to the residence after reports of gunfire involving a possible home intruder. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities later confirmed that he had died at the scene.

The homeowner was not physically injured, officials said, though he was taken to a hospital as a precaution or for a minor medical concern after the shooting. No other people were reported to have been inside the home during the encounter.

Authorities have not publicly identified the man who was killed or the homeowner. Investigators also had not said whether the two men knew each other. Officials initially described the dead man as an unknown individual encountered by the resident and later referred to the incident as a reported home invasion involving a suspected burglar.

Those preliminary descriptions do not establish every detail of what happened inside or around the residence. Investigators have not publicly released a full timeline of the encounter, information about how the man allegedly entered the property or further evidence explaining what occurred immediately before the shooting.

The search for video and witnesses could help investigators establish a clearer chronology and determine whether other evidence exists outside the homeowner’s account. Authorities had not announced additional conclusions about the shooting as of Wednesday morning.

The Harris County investigation remains open. Officials have not released further information about the identity of the man who died or announced a final determination about the circumstances of the shooting.
