The district sent a crisis support team to campus after the student was fatally struck Tuesday morning south of Middlesex.
MIDDLESEX, N.C. — Southern Nash High School students and staff are receiving grief support after a student was killed Tuesday morning when a pickup truck struck her as she crossed a rural Nash County road toward her waiting school bus.
Nash County Public Schools said its Traumatic Event Debriefing Team was at Southern Nash High School following the Nov. 3 death and would remain available to support students in the coming days. Officials have not publicly identified the student and have asked the community to respect her family’s privacy.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. on Bryant Road near Hoyt Road, south of Middlesex. The student was waiting near a private drive as her school bus approached and stopped to pick her up.
Investigators said the bus’s amber warning lights were flashing when it stopped, but its red warning lights and stop arm had not been activated. The student then entered the roadway and was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Silverado, according to the Highway Patrol. The pickup driver stopped after the collision.
The student was taken to a hospital after the crash and died later that morning. The Highway Patrol said the student’s actions contributed to the collision. Investigators said they do not suspect impairment by the pickup driver, and no charges are expected.
The sequence involving the school bus’s warning lights is significant to investigators’ account of what happened. The bus was preparing for the pickup with its amber lights operating, but authorities said the red lights and stop arm that direct traffic to stop had not yet been activated when the student crossed the road.
Nash County Public Schools said the student’s death also underscored the importance of caution around school buses and of motorists following school bus safety laws. The district’s immediate response, however, has centered on helping the Southern Nash High School community cope with the loss.
The district has not released further information about the student or announced how long additional support personnel will remain on campus. The Highway Patrol has not announced any charges or indicated that impairment played a role in the fatal crash.
As the school community mourns, the student’s identity remains private at her family’s request. Authorities have said no charges are expected based on the investigation reported so far.
