BIRMINGHAM, England — A woman has died after a stabbing incident at a bus stop in Birmingham, prompting an outcry as police investigate what they describe as an unprovoked attack. The incident occurred on Friday evening near the Bullring shopping center, leaving the local community shaken.
Katie Fox, 34, was assaulted shortly before 9 p.m. GMT while waiting at the Smallbrook Queensway bus stop. Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries, and police have since updated the charges against her alleged attacker.
Djeison Rafael, 21, has been charged with murder following Fox’s death. Initially accused of attempted murder, Rafael appeared in Birmingham Magistrates’ Court where he faced multiple charges, including possession of a Stanley knife and assaulting a detention escort officer. Detailing his behavior in court, District Judge John Bristow rebuked Rafael for interrupting proceedings, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses.
Police confirmed that Rafael, a resident of Smethwick, will be held accountable for other offenses dating back to late October and early November. He has been remanded until a hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, set for November 12.
Authorities have intensified their presence in the city center to reassure the public while supporting Fox’s family during this tragic time. Investigators are appealing for witnesses who may have seen Rafael, described as a Black British national wearing an all-gray tracksuit at the time of the crime.
