OMAHA, Neb. — A 26-year-old man faced a preliminary hearing Wednesday charged with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing that occurred at a laundromat parking lot. Deshawn Griffin is accused of killing 35-year-old Johnathan Wallace in the incident near 46th and Cuming Streets.
During the hearing, prosecutors detailed the accusations, indicating that Griffin allegedly inflicted two fatal stab wounds to Wallace’s heart. In addition to Griffin, his wife, 24-year-old Kayla Griffin, is facing charges as an accessory to the crime.
As the hearing unfolded, Deshawn Griffin’s defense team petitioned for a reduction of the murder charge to manslaughter. However, the presiding judge concluded there was probable cause to maintain the second-degree murder charge against Griffin.
A detective testified that the confrontation began when Wallace approached Griffin asking for a lighter, resulting in a heated dispute. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as stab wounds to the chest, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Authorities tracked the couple’s vehicle from surveillance footage at the laundromat to their residence. Upon arrival, they noted that their appearances matched those of individuals seen at the laundromat during the altercation. This led to the execution of an arrest warrant.
Inside the Griffin home, investigators located the knife believed to be the murder weapon, along with clothing stained with blood. The detective also pointed out that Deshawn Griffin altered his appearance by shaving his head and beard before being apprehended.
Moreover, Griffin’s phone activity revealed searches about auto body paint and repair costs, raising further questions in the investigation. During his police interview, Griffin recounted the moments leading to the stabbing. He stated that after lending Wallace a lighter, the situation escalated as Wallace reportedly began reaching for a backpack. Fearing for his safety, Griffin claimed he drew his knife to deter Wallace, ultimately resulting in the stabbing. However, a search of the backpack revealed no weapons.
