The victim, 80-year-old Brenda Wheeler, was found dead inside a Monroe Street home.
CHEVERLY, Md. — A domestic dispute call Tuesday morning ended with an 80-year-old woman dead and her son charged with murder, Prince George’s County police said.
Police said Darrick Alston, 54, is accused of fatally stabbing his mother, Brenda Wheeler, inside a home in the 6200 block of Monroe Street. Officers found Wheeler suffering from stab wounds after they were called to the home at about 9:10 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the preliminary evidence shows Alston stabbed Wheeler during an argument. Police have not described the argument or said how many stab wounds Wheeler suffered. Alston was arrested at the scene, and officials said no bond was set after he was placed in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
The homicide investigation is being handled by Prince George’s County police, which investigates killings in the town of Cheverly. The town’s officers were the first to respond to the domestic dispute call, according to police. The case number released by investigators is 26-0025124.
Alston faces first-degree murder and second-degree murder charges. Prosecutors have not publicly laid out the full case, and police have not released a charging document in the public statements about the arrest. More details could emerge at future court hearings, including whether investigators recovered a weapon and whether any witnesses gave statements.
The killing happened in a residential part of Cheverly, a small Prince George’s County community just east of Washington. The case drew attention because police said the accused attacker and the victim were mother and son. Authorities have not released information about funeral arrangements or family statements.
The investigation remains active. Alston is being held without bond, and the next major step is expected in court, where the charges and evidence will be reviewed.
