LUGGERE, Nigeria — Residents of a Fulani community in Barkin Ladi have reported serious allegations against military personnel, claiming that soldiers retaliated violently after the death of a comrade. The accusations include the killing of livestock and the destruction of properties, escalating tensions in an already fragile area.
The conflict began after the discovery of a soldier’s body near Maraban Kantoma, a boundary area between Barkin Ladi and Mangu local governments. According to community leader Abdullahi Umar, the soldier was found dead with his firearm missing, prompting military personnel to suspect local residents were involved.
Umar recounted the alleged incident, stating that soldiers launched an assault on their community early Saturday morning. He described hearing gunfire and witnessing buildings engulfed in flames while families were still sleeping, inciting fear and confusion among the residents.
In his account, Umar emphasized the community’s distance from the location where the soldier’s body was discovered, questioning why military forces chose to target them when other villages lie closer to the incident site. He criticized the military approach, stating the Fulani community should not bear the consequences for actions they did not commit.
The distress among community members is palpable, as Umar conveyed their requests for justice. He urged military leaders to conduct thorough investigations to identify and prosecute the actual perpetrators, rather than penalizing innocent citizens.
“The situation has become unbearable,” he said. “We just want the truth to come out and for justice to be served. We have faced ongoing harassment, and this latest incident has exacerbated our suffering.”
