Anchorage, Alaska – A tragic incident unfolded in the remote Inupiat whaling village of Point Hope on Alaska’s northwest coast, resulting in two fatalities and two individuals left seriously wounded. The community was left reeling from the shooting that occurred on Sunday, sparking the closure of a local school on Monday.
According to reports from the Anchorage Daily News, a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody in connection with the incident. The teenage suspect has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of first-degree attempted murder. In Alaska, minors aged 16 and older can be tried as adults for murder charges.
Law enforcement officers from the North Slope Borough Police Department responded to the scene after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered a man and a woman deceased, along with two wounded men. All four individuals appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds.
Witnesses reported seeing the teenager enter the home and begin shooting, with others stating they observed him leaving with a handgun. The boy voluntarily surrendered himself at the local police station, accompanied by his father, shortly before midnight on Sunday.

The North Slope Borough issued a statement expressing a commitment to coming together as a community to provide support and healing in the aftermath of the tragedy. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and his wife expressed their condolences for those impacted by the senseless act of violence.
Point Hope, home to approximately 675 residents, sits on a triangular spit surrounded by the Chukchi Sea and Arctic Ocean. The historic peninsula is known for its continuous habitation dating back over 2,000 years, with early inhabitants arriving in the region for bowhead whaling purposes.
