MINNEDOSA, MANITOBA – A man who pleaded guilty to a brutal attack on his partner in Minnedosa, Manitoba, is seeking to withdraw his guilty plea despite being described by a judge as committing an act of “stunning violence.” Wayne William Joseph Becks, 40, entered his guilty pleas to charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm in October. He was set to be sentenced on Jan. 23, but his lawyer withdrew from the case, leaving its status uncertain.
During a court appearance, Crown attorney Reid Girard opposed Becks’ release, expressing concerns about his potential to re-offend and his commitment to appearing in court. Girard presented the agreed statement of facts regarding the incident to the court, which unfolded in November 2022 when Yellowhead RCMP responded to a home following a call from a 14-year-old girl reporting her mother’s injuries.
The woman had sustained multiple injuries, including cuts, bruises, and chipped teeth, after a violent confrontation with Becks. According to the victim’s account, Becks became aggressive during an altercation fueled by alcohol and marijuana, wielding knives and physically attacking her. In a courageous attempt to protect her mother, the woman’s daughter intervened and was also subjected to violence by Becks.
Despite Becks’ claims of feeling pressured to plead guilty and portraying himself as a victim of the incident, Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta emphasized the severity of the charges and the significant threat Becks posed to the victims. Ultimately, bail was denied, and Becks is set to appear in Minnedosa court on March 5 for further proceedings in the case.
