Shooting Surge: Man Critically Injured in Eye Amid Wave of Weekend Violence in Little Village

Chicago, Illinois — A series of violent incidents over the weekend has left at least six people dead, including a child, and wounded 27 others across the city, authorities report. The shooting victims ranged in age from 5 to 48, highlighting the widespread impact of gun violence in the community.

Among the most alarming incidents, a 33-year-old woman was critically injured on Friday evening when multiple shots were fired at her while she drove in the Little Village neighborhood. Reports indicate that an unknown assailant in a black vehicle targeted her, resulting in a serious gunshot wound to her right eye. She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Just hours later, two men, both 38, were shot in the 300 block of South Maplewood Avenue. One victim succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Stroger Hospital, while the other was critically wounded.

The wave of violence continued with additional shootings reported throughout the weekend. In a particularly chaotic Friday night, a man sustained a knee injury after being shot by an assailant in a silver SUV as he drove near South DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Saturday brought more tragic news: a 5-year-old boy was shot in the head while inside an apartment in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue and later died at Comer Children’s Hospital. In another incident, a 17-year-old boy also sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head while inside a residence.

The weekend violence didn’t stop there. As the sun rose on Sunday, a 22-year-old man was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting shortly after a traffic accident. He remains in critical condition. The weekend culminated in a flurry of attacks on Sunday evening, including a dispute that escalated with multiple shooters targeting groups of people.

In the wake of the violence, law enforcement has reported no immediate arrests related to the majority of the incidents. Community leaders are urging immediate action to address the root causes of gun violence in their neighborhoods.

As families mourn their loved ones, the city is grappling with a troubling trend that has left many residents reeling. The increasing frequency and severity of such violent incidents are raising concerns about safety and the need for effective interventions to prevent future tragedies.

Community organizations and city officials are being called upon to collaborate more closely to combat the escalating issue of gun violence, which continues to disrupt lives across Chicago.
