Shooting of MPD Officer: 17-Year-Old to be Prosecuted as Adult, Facing Multiple Charges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to prosecute a 17-year-old as an adult in connection with the fatal shooting of a Memphis Police Department officer. The office has filed a motion to apply adult charges in the case, including 13 counts of Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder, 13 counts of Assault Against First Responder, and 13 counts of Aggravated Assault.

The decision not to pursue a murder charge at this time is based on preliminary findings suggesting that the officer, Joseph McKinney, may have been killed by friendly fire during the incident. Despite this, the District Attorney’s Office maintains that the actions of the 17-year-old suspect were a significant factor in Officer McKinney’s death. If new evidence emerges for additional prosecution, they intend to explore all legal avenues.

In addition to the charges related to the shooting of Officer McKinney, the teen is facing charges of Theft of Property, Possession of a Firearm during a Dangerous Felony, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, and Evading Arrest. If convicted on all charges, the suspect could potentially face a maximum sentence of 400 years.

The shooting, which also resulted in the death of 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley, occurred early on April 12 when police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle. As officers approached the vehicle, both Lobley and the 17-year-old suspect allegedly opened fire, leading to a confrontation where Lobley was killed by police return fire. It was initially believed that Officer McKinney had been shot by one of the suspects.

Chief C.J. Davis expressed condolences for Officer McKinney’s death and emphasized the violent nature of the encounter. Two other officers sustained injuries in the shooting but have since been released from the hospital. The 17-year-old suspect remains in critical condition. The investigation into the incident is ongoing under the supervision of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations.

Amidst the legal proceedings, Jaylen Lobley’s mother has spoken out, disputing the claims against her son and expressing her belief that he did not shoot at the police. She has criticized the lack of communication from law enforcement in reaching out to her regarding the case. The tragic events of that night continue to reverberate through the community, leaving authorities and residents grappling with the complexities and consequences of the shooting.
