Shooting Near NRG Involves Students, One Charged with Aggravated Assault

HOUSTON — A shooting incident near NRG Park has left one teenager injured and has led to charges against another, according to local law enforcement. The incident unfolded Wednesday morning, involving several students from the Harris County Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP), which serves students who have faced expulsion due to criminal conduct or disciplinary issues.

As students disembarked from their bus en route to school, they reportedly engaged with another group of young people in the vicinity of Kirby Drive and McNee Road. Around 9 a.m., authorities received reports of gunfire in the area. Officers arrived shortly after to find one juvenile with what was characterized as a superficial gunshot wound. The injured teen was promptly transported to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators stated that the exchange of gunfire occurred a few blocks from the school, igniting an argument between the two groups. Following the shooting, officers traced a vehicle potentially linked to the incident. Inside, they discovered the alleged shooter, while the driver claimed the individual had jumped into the car unexpectedly.

Meanwhile, the scene near the NRG grounds was heavily patrolled by officers and canine units as they scoured the area for additional evidence. Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least two individuals placed into police vehicles during the incident.

The Harris County Precinct One Constable’s Office confirmed that a 16-year-old is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators are working diligently to determine whether those involved in the shooting, including both the victim and the alleged perpetrator, are students within the JJAEP program.

In response to the incident, the Juvenile Justice Department is conducting further inquiries to clarify the identities of those involved. Community violence has become a growing concern, prompting calls for increased safety measures in schools and surrounding areas.

As this story develops, authorities emphasize the importance of safety vigilance and encourage anyone with additional information to come forward.
