Minneapolis, Minn. — In a tragic incident on August 27, a shooter opened fire at a Catholic school Mass, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to 21 others. The assailant, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, had purchased a firearm just four days prior to the attack, according to the owner of a local gun shop.
Westman targeted the Annunciation Catholic Church while attendees were gathered for services around 8:30 a.m. He fired shots from outside the church, breaking stained-glass windows in the process. Following the attack, Westman took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot.
Kory Krause, owner of Frontiersman Sports in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, provided security footage that shows Westman entering the store on August 23. During his visit, he browsed a variety of firearms and ammunition for approximately 40 minutes before legally purchasing a pre-owned .38 Special revolver. Although this weapon was not used during the shooting, Krause’s observations raise questions regarding how such a catastrophic event occurred without warning signs.
Krause described Westman as friendly and engaging, remarking on how the shooter interacted positively with staff and other customers. “He seemed enthusiastic about firearms and appeared completely normal,” Krause stated. The owner emphasized that there were no indications that Westman posed a threat, expressing heartbreak over the ensuing tragedy and questioning whether any red flags were missed during the gun sale process.
When Westman’s background information was checked against the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, it returned a “proceed” signal, allowing for the purchase of the firearm. Krause noted the staff’s expertise in identifying potential risks and expressed their commitment to thorough vetting procedures. “Our staff has a stellar reputation with law enforcement for preventing sales to individuals who might be a danger to themselves or others,” he said.
