Security Guard’s Patrol Vehicle Fatally Strikes 1-Year-Old

The child was struck while a security guard was patrolling an apartment complex, police said.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy who was struck by a security guard’s vehicle Friday night at a southwest Houston apartment complex.

The crash happened around 9:26 p.m. at the Reserve at Westwood apartments near Bissonnet Street and the Sam Houston Tollway. Police said the boy’s family was leaving the complex and loading a vehicle when the child got away from his mother and entered a roadway in the parking lot.

Investigators said the security guard was driving through the property on patrol when the vehicle hit the child. The guard stopped immediately, and both the guard and the child’s father called 911. Police said they started first aid while waiting for help to arrive.

After trying to help the child, the father and guard decided to drive him to a hospital in the guard’s vehicle, police said. Houston Fire Department crews reached the complex before they could leave, began emergency care and took the boy to a hospital, where he died.

Officials said the guard stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. Police said DWI investigators found no signs that the guard was impaired. No charges had been filed, though Houston police said the investigation was continuing.

The boy was identified in local reports as Liam. Police have not released a full public account of the family’s movements before the crash, and investigators have not said whether lighting, speed or visibility played a role.

The fatal crash left police reviewing a private apartment roadway rather than a city street. Investigators were expected to examine witness statements, emergency calls and any available video from the property before closing the case.

As of Tuesday, Houston police said the security guard was not facing criminal charges.
