San Marcos Police Officer’s Killer Sentenced to Life: Stewart Thomas Mettz Convicted of Capital Murder

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — Stewart Thomas Mettz has been sentenced to life without parole for the capital murder of San Marcos Police Officer Kenneth Copeland, who was killed in the line of duty on December 4, 2017. Copeland, 58, was shot multiple times by Mettz upon arriving at his residence to carry out an arrest warrant. This marked the first time a San Marcos police officer had been killed in the line of duty.

22nd District Court Judge Bruce Boyer, in office for 11 years, delivered the sentence on January 11, more than six years after Copeland’s death. Hays County Assistant District Attorney’s Allison Buess and Katie Arnold prosecuted the trial, leading to Mettz’s conviction.

The San Marcos Police Department released a statement expressing gratitude for the verdict, saying, “While this verdict may not change the tragic loss we suffered on December 4, 2017, we are thankful for the Capital Murder conviction of Stewart Mettz, who received a sentence of life without parole.”

Officer Copeland, who joined the force in 1998, was hailed as a shining example of public service, known for his friendly demeanor and selfless dedication to the community. At his memorial service, Pastor Jeff Latham described Copeland as someone who always had a smile on his face and a joy that is missed by the department and the rest of Hays County’s first responders.

The department also thanked the Hays County District Attorney’s Office for their commitment in bringing the case to a resolution and expressed relief that justice has been served, but acknowledged that the loss of Copeland continues to resonate.

Throughout the six-year legal process, Copeland has been remembered for his exceptional service and dedication to his community. The San Marcos community and the entire police force mourned the loss of a beloved officer and friend.
